Dimitar Berbatov believes that Manchester United will sign another striker in the summer, but the forward said he had been given no indication that he could be sold to make way for any new arrivals and is confident he will be at the club next season.
Berbatov conceded that he has struggled to live up to expectations since his club-record £30.75 million move from Tottenham Hotspur 20 months ago. But he is determined to see out the remaining two years of his contract and said he would not change his perceived surly demeanour by “grinning like an idiot” just to pacify his critics.
Berbatov said: “I’m sure United will buy a new striker, but I am there and that’s important. I will try to fulfil my contract because where would I go after United? I do not know about interest from other clubs and I have had no meetings because I am a Manchester United player.
“In my two years things could have been better, but they could have been worse, too. I have had my moments. I have won the championship and the Carling Cup, but people had great expectations for the money it cost to sign me. We do not know what will happen in the third year. I do not show any emotions but I’m really happy.”
