Dimitar Berbatov Stunning Play in League Continues
Monaco claimed a second consecutive victory in the league, which helps Leonardo Jardim’s position at the club, after a 2-0 result against Toulouse.
Former Tottenham and Manchester United forward Dimitar Berbatov was the standout player in the match after he scored a brace with one of them coming from the penalty spot. Monaco have been a shadow of their former self after severe budget cuts. The likes of Radamel Falcao and James Rodrigues departed the club in the summer. This left players like Berbatov as the key men in the squad. The Bulgarian striker has stepped up more than one occasion and it was the case in the weekend as well.
The result sees Monaco move up to second place in the table, but Jardim will be aware that the team will have to improve a lot if they are to have any hope of catching top teams like Olympique Marseille and Paris St Germain. Finishing in the Champions League spot will be a requirement for the club given the financial distress that they are going through. Only the top three teams can hope to play in the Champions League next season and Monaco are already seven points behind third placed Lyon. Jardim says that the win overToulouse can provide the team with some much-needed confidence.
“The victory is important for our confidence. It was the third game of the week and I think that Toulouse aren’t used to that. I found them to be tired. Monaco were better prepared for putting together a run of matches and that certainly played to our advantage,” said Jardim. Monaco are still involved in the Champions League group stages this season and they take on Russian outfit Zenit St Petersburg in the final group match looking to maintain their second spot in the group.
